370 million working days lost last year

It is hard to believe that 370 million working days were lost last year - not through holidays or sickness, but through dealing with workplace disputes.

According to an international business psychology study, the Birmingham Post reported this week, the average UK employee spends more than two hours a week dealing with conflict, meaning that more than 370 million working days were lost in 2008, at a cost of £24 billion to the UK economy; an expense that the economy could certainly do without during already difficult times.

Previous research conducted by the CIPD (Chartered Instritute of Personnel and Development) along with the new ACAS Code of Practice, have stressed the need for mediation to be considered one of the quickest and most cost-effective methods of dispute resolution within the workplace.
